"Newfane Youth Is Accidentally Shot To Death
"A 15-year-old Town of Newfane youth was fatally shot when another youth accidentally discharged a .22 caliber-rifle, Niagara County Sheriff's Deputies said today.
"Stephan Michael Cook, of 2549 Main St., Newfane, the son of Gary Cook, 2946 Hess Rd., Appleton, and Mrs. Carol Taylor, 2549 Main St., Newfane, was pronouced dead at arrival at Inter-Community Memorial Hospital, Newfane.
"Deputy Harry D. Taylor was sent to the Cook residence at 6:45 p.m., Tuesday, and said he found the youth lying in an orchard at the rear of his home with a bullet wound in the left side of the head.
"Investigators Francis Giles and Richard A Montesanti determined the shooting was accidental, after interviewing two youths who had been with the boy at the time of the incident.
"Investigators said one boy was the deceased's brother, * * *, and the other was a 15-year-old whom they declined to identify. They said the 15-year-old accidentally discharged the rifle while Stephan Cook was in front of him, picking up spent shells.
"Niagara County Coroner Daniel K. Andrews said he issued a certificate of accidental death.
"The victim was born in Newfane, Sept. 11, 1969, and was a freshman at Newfane Central High School. He was on the Newfane Central track team and was a member of Explorer Post No. 911, sponsored at the Niagara County jail.
"Besides his parents and his brother, * * *, he is survived by [other siblings and half-siblings]. He is also survived by grandparents Mrs. Elmer Drury, of Lockport, and Mr. and Mrs. Russell B. Cook, of Appleton.
"Friends may call at the Rutland-Corwin Funeral Home Inc., 2670 Main St., Newfane, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., Thursday, where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Friday.
"The Rev. George Jones of the Wesleyan Methodist Church, Appleton, will officiate. Burial will be in the Corwin Cemetery."
