About Ida A (Carpenter) Chapman

Some online family trees give the name of Hugh W Chapman's wife as Laura Bristol. However, according to marriage records found in New York County Marriages, 1908-1935, on familysearch.org, Laura M Bristol, daughter of Graham B and Martha (Chapman) Bristol, married Hugh S Chapman, son of Peter and Louisa (Smith) Chapman, on 4 Feb 1917 in USA, NY, Seneca, Ovid. Hugh W Chapman was already deceased by the time Hugh S Chapman and Laura M Bristol were married.

An Ancestral File provided to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints gives Hugh W Chapman's wife's name as Nellie, with no further information.

Hugh W Chapman and Ida A Carpenter were married after the 1880 census, and Ida died before the 1900 census. Ida's identity might not have been discovered were it not for two clues left by her daughter Bessie Louisa (Chapman) Cunningham.

The first place Bessie left Ida's name was on her marriage license. Information from this license is preserved in Iowa County Marriages, 1838-1934, which can be found on familysearch.org.

The second place Bessie recorded her mother's name was in the 1925 Iowa State census, which can be found through ancestry.com.

Following Bessie's clues, a Memorial for Ida A Chapman, wife of Hugh Chapman, was found on the website Find-a-Grave.
