About Lewis Almond "Mayor" Mead

From Niagara County, New York, pages 758-59:

"Lewis A. Mead, farmer and fruit grower, is one of the dependable business men and esteemed citizens of the town of Hartland, and is a member of an old pioneer family of Niagara county. He was born on the old Mead homestead in the town of Hartland, June 26, 1875, a son of William H. and Martha M. (Weeks) Mead.

"Lewis A. Mead obtained his education in the country schools and at Lockport and Niagara Falls. Until he reached manhood he remained on the home farm, then operated a farm for a time situated opposite the homestead, which latter property he subsequently bought. He has 135 acres of well developed land which he devotes mainly to general farming, has twenty acres in fruit, and finds it profitable to raise some sheep. He is a careful, well posted farmer and has long been a member of the Hartland Grange. Mr. Mead was married to Augusta Klino, who was born in Germany, daughter of Lewis and Augusta Klino. The family came to the United States in 1885 and settled in the town of Hartland, Niagara county. The father of Mrs. Mead died on his farm in 1912, but her mother survives and resides with Mr. and Mrs. Mead. The latter was the third born in her parents' family, the others being as follows: Hattie, who is the wife of Ward Hall, of Somerset; Lewis who is in business in Buffalo; and Oscar and Charles both live at Niagara Falls. Mr. Mead also was the third born of his parents' children and has two sisters and one brother, namely: Mary, who is the wife of Jacob Taylor, of Johnson's Creek; Julia, who is the wife of Duane Baker, also of Johnson's Creek; and Linus J., who is a farmer in the town of Hartland. Mr. and Mrs. Lewis A. Mead have the following children; Howard Duane, Homer William, Julia Augusta, Harold Lewis, Ruth Caroline, Louah Maria, Donald Wilson and Melvin Lee. The family attend the Baptist Church, and are well and favorably known by their neighbors and throughout the entire neighborhood. Mr. Mead was made a Mason when only twenty-one years old and belongs to Hartland Lodge, F. & A. M. In politics he is nominally a Democrat but to some degree is inclined to trust to his own judgment in exercising his right of citizenship. He has served in numerous town offices and at all times has performed his duties with efficiency."

The Mead farm was located on Johnson Creek Road, across from the family farm of Louis Wilber and Harriet Ann Viola "Hattie" (Miles) Rosseau. Two of the Mead boys, Homer William and Harold Lewis "Jim," married Rosseau girls, Hazel Ann and Doris Helene, respectively, and one Mead girl, Ruth Caroline, married a Rosseau boy, Howard Louis.
