"Suffered a Fall Several Weeks Ago and Failed Rapidly After Injury
"In the passing of Asa C Bailey, Sutherland loses from its community another citizen who has been an outstanding figure for many years. Death came to Mr Bailey at 3:15 Sunday afternoon, bringing to a close a long and useful life. Mr. Bailey suffered a broken leg last October 28, 1943, and was hospitalized until January 2, 1944. After his return home he continued to improve and had sufficently improved to be about, taking care of his business and driving his car. Three weeks ago he fell at his home and had been confined to his bed, failing rapidly. His wife [second wife, Mary (Dek) (Flinders) Bailey], and daughters, Mrs Victor Colburn of Glendale, Calif, and Mrs Vernon Flinders [the daughter of his second wife, Mary (Dek) Flinders and Samuel Challand Flinders] were with him when he passed away.
"Funeral services were held at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon from the Relste Funeral Home, with Rev H.G. Dawes, pastor of the Methodist church in charge. The music for the service included two solos, "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere" and "In the Sweet By and By" by Mrs Philip Jordan, with accompaniment by Maryellen Jensen.
"Pallbearers were Arthur Phipps of Cherokee, Thos. McCulla, Edwin Beck, Roy Standford of Larrabee, Guy Youde and Chris Montgomery.
"Interment was in Waterman cemetery.
"1858 -- Asa C. Bailey -- 1944
"Asa C. Bailey was born in DeKalb county, Illinois, October 30, 1858, and passed away at his home in Sutherland May 21, 1944, at the age of 85 years, 6 months and 21 days. He was the son of Cyrenius and Jane Morey Bailey, and was the last of a family of seven children, his sister, Mrs Anna B Flinders, preceeded him in death only a year ago.
"Mr. Bailey was reared to the life of a farmer and received a good common school education. About the year 1877 his father had purchased about 400 acres of land in Cherokee county, and in Oct. 1879, Mr. Bailey came to acquire possesion of 160 acres of this which his father had deeded to him. He made the trip from Illinois to Iowa in a covered wagon and like many of the early settlers in the state suffered the hardships of the pioneers. Mr. Bailey immediately began the task of improving his land and increased his holdings until he had acquired a thousand acres. He was also well known thoughtout the territory as a stockman.
"Mr. Bailey was married March 15, 1886, to Miss Jennie M Rose at Renwick, Iowa. Six children were born to this union, only one of whom survives. She is a daughter, Mrs. Victor Colburn (Dorothy) of Glendale, Calif.
"On October 25, 1910 he was married to Mrs. Mary Dek Flinders. They purchased the Elliott property on the northwest edge of Sutherland shortly after their marriage and have continued to make this their home.
"Survivors include his wife Mary, his daughter Mrs. Victor Colburn of Glendale, Calif., two stepsons, Arthur C Flinders of San Antonio, Tex., and Vernon S. Flinders of Sutherland and four grandchildren.
"Mr. Bailey was baptized in the Baptist faith in infancy and has been a supporter of the Methodist church for many years. He was a man of unusual energy, being active until a few months before his death. He had unusual business qualifications and was a Republican in thought and action. Much credit is due him for his efforts and success in organization of the Waterman cemetery association, for which this community is indebted."
