Vera Alice Arline (Hixon) Campbell, 87, Carthage, Mo., passed away Monday, Dec. 22, 2008, at her home after a lengthy illness. Mrs. Campbell was born April 2, 1921, in Lawrence County, Mo., the daughter of Homer Virgil Hixon and Pansy Jeanetta (Stutzman) Hixon. She attended Red Oak School and graduated from Lockwood High School in 1939. She came to Carthage in 1940, from Red Oak, Mo., marrying Walter Scott Campbell on Sept. 25, 1940, in Carthage. She took great pride in being the family seamstress and was acknowledged by her late husband, Scott Campbell, as being the best cook in Jasper County. She was a special mother and grandmother to her children and grandchildren and offered special love and care to several children in the community. Mrs. Campbell was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Carthage; a great gardener, a charter member of the Dogwood Garden Club and served as a Girl and Boy Scout leader. Survivors include two daughters, * * *; two sons, * * *; one sister, * * *.; one brother, * * *; a sister-in-law, * * *; 10 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; and one brother, Emory Bill Hixon. Visitation will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 26, in the fellowship hall of the First United Methodist Church, Carthage. Funeral services will follow at 11 a.m. in the church sanctuary. Minister James Lee will officiate. Burial will be in New Hope Cemetery, Avilla, Mo.
