"Winnifred F. Montgomery, 95, of Cherokee, passed away Friday, Aug. 22, 2008 at Careage Hills in Cherokee. Funeral services were held on August 26 at the Meriden Evangelical Free Church, with Pastor Larry Ostercamp and Lewis Leeds officiating. Burial was in the Cedar Cemetery at Larrabee. Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee was in charge of arrangements.

"Winnifred was born in Larrabee on June 13, 1913 to Clarence and Della (Morey) Arrasmith. Her mother died on Feb. 12, 1920 and her father on May 23, 1927. Her uncle and aunt, Irvin and Leona Morey adopted her. She was baptized at the Christian Church in Larrabee, and graduated from Larrabee High School in 1931. Winnifred took the summer teacher's course at Buena Vista College in Storm Lake, and taught at Spring Center country school, five miles east of Larrabee, for three years.

She was married to Clarence Edward Montgomery on May 28, 1934 at Larrabee, and the couple lived on a farm close to the Little Sioux River, east of Sutherland. They lived in the Sutherland area until 1946, when they moved to a farm by Larrabee. In 1951, they moved to a farm at Astoria, S.D. After Clarence suffered a heart attack, they moved back to Cherokee in 1959. Winnifred worked at Gregg's Hilltop Nursing Home (now Careage Hills) for 18 years, retiring in 1978. Winnie spent winters in California with her sisters Nell and Shirley until 1996. Following a stroke, she moved in with her [child]. In 2001, she entered Careage Hills. Winnifred was a member of the Heritage Bible Church, the Women's Missionary Society and five different Day Clubs. She also served as the Church organist and pianist, taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible school, and had Good News Clubs until she was in her 80's.

"Through the years, Win also liked to crochet, make fabric and porcelain dolls, do gardening with flowers and vegetables and read books.

"She was preceded in death by her husband, on Feb. 22, 1987, one daughter Carol Livingston, one granddaughter Yvette Livingston, one great-granddaughter Stephanie Renee Fischer, three sons-in-law - Lyle Sorensen, Allen Livingston, and Jack Mitchell; two sisters, Nellie Morey and Della Wilson; one brother and sister-in-law Joseph and Ann Morey; and two brothers-in-law, Wally Rundell and Gordon Bryant.

"She is survived by her children and their spouses: * * *; 16 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, 4 great-great-grandchildren; two sisters * * * and many nieces and nephews."
