"Longtime Great Falls resident Bessie A. (Shurtlieff) Gaskill, 99, of 3000 11th Ave. S., died of natural causes Friday at Peace Hospice.
"At her request, no services are planned, and cremation will take place under the direction of Croxford Funeral Home and Crematory.
"Survivors include her only daughter, * * *; her beloved daughter-in-law, * * *; grandchildren * * *; and great-grandchildren * * *.
"She was preceded in death by her husband, Ellerton Flinders Gaskill; her parents, Charles Francis Shurtlieff and Adda Irene Young; sisters Mabel, Myrtle, Eva Lena, Edith and Dorothy; her brothers, Robert and Walter Wayne; and her son, Ellerton Frank "Pete" Gaskill, an agricultural engineer and longtime resident of Great Falls.
"Bessie was born Aug. 11, 1905, in Tabor, Iowa, and was a longtime resident of Great Falls. Bessie began her career as an elementary teacher, then attended business college in Mankato, Minn., and worked for the Kahler Corporation in Rochester, Minn. She held the position of faculty secretary at Macalester College in St. Paul and was later employed by the audio-visual department of the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis.
"In 1925, she married Ellerton Flinders Gaskill (formerly assistant general claim agent for the Northern Pacific Railway) and moved to Butte, Mont., where their children were born. The family also lived in Billings and Glendive, moving to St. Paul in 1937, where she resided until moving to Great Falls in 1971, following her husband's death.
"Bessie was a member of Daughters of the American Revolution, Daughters of Founders and Patriots and an avid student of genealogy, history and current events.
"Memorials are suggested to Peace Hospice of Great Falls or the donor's choice."
