Jacob Mason "Jake" Smith died on 19 Sep 2013 in USA, CT, Lake Champlain.

This Obituary is from The Colebrook Chronicle, USA, VT, 27 Sep 2013, Vol 14, No 11, pages 1 and 3.

"Jake Smith Drowning Victim in Lake Champlain

"A young man who graduated from Canaan Memorial High School in 2008 lost his life in a tragic swimming accident last Friday night, Sept. 20.

"Jake Smith, the son of ***, was living in Burlington, Vt. He was on an anchored boat with friends on Lake Champlain in Burlington, where he has lived since graduating from the University of Vermont last year. At around 9:30 p.m., he and another friend decided to take a swim by diving off the boat into the lake.

"According to news reports, friends who stayed on the boat say that Jake and his companion both began to struggle in the water. Jake's companion was rescued and pulled back into the boat, but Jake went under before he could be pulled from the water. The Colchester, Vt., Police Chief reported to the Burlington Free Press that the wind and the waves were rough on Friday night.

"After a three-day search, Smith's body was found in about 75 feet of water and recovered on Monday evening by divers in Mallets Bay when the Vt. State Police Marine Division used a sonar device. Rescuers from the U.S. Coast Guard had searched for him using both boats and helicopters.

"Following an investigation into Smith's death and an autopsy, Smith was returned home to his family and a 'Celebration of Life' will be held for him on Saturday, Sept. 28, at 2 p.m. at the Canaan Memorial High School Gymnasium in Canaan, Vt.

"Jake will be remembered for his love of his family and friends, for skiing and writing and everyone is invited to tell a story. He leaves his parents and his [sibling]."
