John Cook Burying Ground
(aka Rhode Island Historical Cemetery
Portsmouth #44)
USA, RI, Newport, Portsmouth, Glen Road

Description from www.findagrave.com: "No sign marks this cemetery. It is in a field, abutting the stone wall. It is under 5 feet from the side of the road and there's an old locked wooden gate in the stone wall. It looks like the current owners put in a wire and picket fence around it several years ago, that has since fallen over. This photo was taken in January and the thorns / brush were over 5 feet high."

Description from http://ricemeteries.tripod.com/po_ceme.HTM#PO044:

"HISTORICAL CEMETERY #: PO044 - COOK LOT, PORTSMOUTH: Location: 34 ft south of GLEN RD at TEL pole # 14. 9 burials with 4 inscriptions from 1690 to 1726. NOTE: In a cow pasture near stone wall. This lot was recorded by George H. Richardson in 1892 (GHR). He described the location as "south side Glen Road of Portsmouth, Slocum estate." In addition to the four stones transcribed, he noted "a few rude stones." The accompanying sketch indicated nine stones in all. "Rhode Island Tombstone Inscriptions" (ANON), circa 1900, at RIHS has three inscriptions. At least one stone was recorded by the Benns circa 1936. Patricia Bodine visited this lot, unenclosed from the surrounding cow pasture, 9 Oct. 1975. She found only three legible stones, four illegible slates, and several fieldstones. This cemetery has been recorded but not checked."
