at Wilmington after being to Catalina island Diary of Jan. 13, 1922

fine morning sunshine & warm camp fire kept all night. B. took pict. of camp after break. bare headed & in shirt sleeves. packed car & moved on 10 o’clock headed for Venice got gas & oil. on way saw woman making flower bed & men working, plowing, drilling &c in their shirt sleeves. 6 men in field husking corn (N.Y. style). rolled on thru Redondo. stopped at Venice saw Len a few min. then stopped at Santa Monica went out on pier took pict. of Pelicans then on along Ocean shore stopped side of road put canvas over car. I put on old house dress & pa overalls & took our first dip in Ocean very warm day pa watching me when a wave slapped him on the back & knocked him down & skinned his toe. I did not laugh (oh no) we only stayed in about 10 min. I had a little bunch under my jaw & did not want to get chilled. back we hustled to car had a good rub down got on dry cloths. pa built camp fire & we got dinner pork chops & cabbage oh but it was good. then went farther along shore & picked up periwinkles (little shells) about 2 qt. pa found a nice “starfish” & an octipus (devil fish) lowest tide we had seen sun down we headed back to Venice stopped at Lens house but could not get away before supper we had beef stake new potatoes, fresh tomatoes for supper left there about 8 for Steve’s when we got there Bill & Juanita, Mr & Mrs Baker there. the ocean was so pretty smooth & sparkled like silver the prettiest we had seen it. blue & silver. eve moon light thus ended the day. went to bed 10:30 tired enough

I just rote Mary D- & got pa to write you. he was just in P.O. & I dare not send my old cards P.P. I must tie them in a bundle & pay a certain postage so I tink not I will stick a few in your letters & smuggle them home when I don’t send picture postcards. pa says he don’t care about the express any more but I like the Star & Union Sun. when there is East Wilson items in. so we will let you off a little, once a week will do now we can get out more. we want to go to the park today its to late & gets dark to soon. hope Fern is well again & the rest of you all well glad to get Fern’s letter also Mary’s Oh, but I would like to see you all. hope the weather stays good so we can get out lots to see yet. hope you all enjoy the pict. cards.
