Mary's Journal Entry
Terrible rainy day eve. went to show
Letter Sent Home
Dear ones all.
Sun. morn. & a rainy one it rained about half of the night. we are at Lens pa & I are the only ones up we left Steves Thurs. morn. went down town then come out here. Fri. we went to the beach (May & I) yes. I did not go anywhere May went down town took Buddy dog to the Vets. he has sore mouth Dr. said it was “mange mouth” so he must be treated once a day (home treatment). he is about the size of Mrs. Selips (she dog) May is keeping him for a Mrs. Tate in Los A- she has no room in Hotel for him. they all here like him so he has a good home lucky dog. suppose Uncle Will starts tomorrow we went to the Santa Fe station to see when he arrives he leaves Chicago tues. 10.25 A.M. & reaches Los A. Fri 7.50 A.M. not so bad. we will try to be there when he gets there then will try to make Valley Center yet that day 130 miles & all goes well.
I have a little cold the first otherwise we feel just fine. I weighed on the same scales (here at Venice) that I did before & almost 150 so am holding my own very well. but hope it warmes up vegetables sure look sick & most had doubled in price such as tomatoes lettuce, spinage, celery (unusual for Calif) oh that makes me think Steve made a small sale closed the deal Thurs. A.M. his commission $200.00 or $250.00 they were feeling quite chipper. it costs so to advertise but all goes with the business. Bill is working (carpentering) they are both well. seams as if news are kinder scarce. Cousin Tom is some better May rec. card last week. My but it rains right along & I’m getting gaunt. the kids are both in bed reading. Len & May snoozing, rather cold for Orange juice at the beach they only took in about a dollar yes. did I tell you Len had invented a machien he is doing fine has sold six. he has to set them & get them & get them running & the receipt to make the juice. all for $600.00 each guess it costs him about half to make one. he will sell the pattent, if you want to go in the business 30,000 dollars (so May says) Oh I will have lots to tell you if I don’t forget it before I see you. hope Hazel is well by this time. glad to hear Lawrence is as well as he is. what do you know of Martha K (poor girl) are Tschabalds in Wilson I sent Anna a birthday care. when she gets it I don’t know. Pa wrote Dr. Burns to send me Cellasin & sent sighned check for same. I am on my last bottle have to pay $.40 lb. for Gluten flour & it comes from Farwell & Rhines, N.Y. state. I use lots of bran with it so 5 lb. goes quite a ways. but as long as I can keep eating. wich I had a piece of our sucker right now thats the best to do with her what became of the calf without the roof in its mouth. got a nice long letter from Rachel Housman I owe about 17 letters & ought to get busy maby will when at Valley Center maby not. its now 9.45 & May just got up & its rained hard all morn. we have to keep lights on its so dark. kept them on till noon Mon. morn. well it rained till middle of P.M. then sun shone so pale eve rained again. this morn. since 8 o’clock has just come down now 8.45 & pa & I only ones out the fire truck just sailed by an awfull morn. for fire. its cold believe me yes. had not gas to cook had a little stove & wood or we would froze. if it keeps on raining don’t know how we will get to Valley Center & don’t know what we will do when we get there if its as cold there as here don’t believe we will go to Redondo unless it clears up soon will hike back to Los A. & pack up to go to J.P. my fingers are so cold can hardly hold pencile. hope you are all well. we are fine. wich I could turn on radiators. Len just got a telegram from May’s cousin he is coming from San Francisco. wants a job.
Love to all Ma.
