wind blew a gale oh how the sand flew

Letter Sent Home

Dear Children

Well uncle Will churned & I have it worked & packed two small bowls full or one large one. pa cut off some limbs from a live oak so J.P. could plow. he is plowing for grapes has some set since we were out the wind is blowing a gale oh how the sand flys. Pa was going to plow but J.P. said the wind blew to hard to do anything else so Pa is stringing beads & buds. it is hard to get buds out here wish we had got more while at Netties oh we learn every day. for the first time last night while eating supper we heard an earth quake it sounded like distant thunder but the earth trumbled the dishes in cupboard rattled. the papers report quakes coming so expect to hear more. Uncle Will is quite rested he did look hollow eyed when he landed. we left Steves Friday morn. before break. they were just getting up (7 o’clock) got to the station 20 to eight 10 min late so had 20 min. to wait but it was warm & we did not mind it. then we went back town (had to anyway) & had our break. 10 min after nine we started got to Oceanside (90 mi.) 2 P.M. had our dinner there got gas & oil then headed for Escondido (30 mi.) got there 4 P.M. got supply eats & then commenced to climb mts. stopped at P.O. wrote you card & got mail for the whole neighborhood. when almost here met J.P. going to P.O. & store for sick folks near here so he handed us his keys & went on so that was a very sure sighn we could get in. so here we are plenty of wood to keep warm yet I know it is not as cold here as in Los A. it done uncle Will lots of good. Will C. told him if he got tired of Cal. to come back. he says that is more than Olive done. am glad he got here safe & sound. we will likely stay here a week or so from now so when you answer this letter direct to Los A. hope you are all well. we are all fine am sending Eucalyptus leaves & top not of quail. the wind still blows fierce but not cold. snow on mts looks near but J.P. says 15 miles. Hoover was glad to see us & Sandy & Sandusky have grown.

Love to all. Mother

Pa dictated this letter & said J.P. has lots to do we no doubt would be here all this month address Valley Center

Josh has hired man cutting & digging out live oaks so five of us for dinner he quit today on account of wind dinner cooking & J.P. unhitched

Thanks for popcorn send Nettie Ray a lb. or so for her to plant I don’t want to spare any of this Will bro’t Redondo, Cal. Box 36
