Letter Sent Home

Dear ones all-

Well we found them about 7.30 last night did not surprise them as they were expecting us this morn. Horace took us down town I got some low shoes & went to dentist. Pa went to P.O. got one of your letters also one from J.P. will send envelope so you can see how the P.O. people send them on I don’t think many of your letters got away sorry you are having so much rain they have had so much in the part of Kan. we came thru they can’t cut their wheat. oh such fields of wheat. we turned south from Pratt, Kan. come to Medicine Lodge & camped there. we had a dandy rain that night (Tues. 11) we did not leave that town yes. morn. till 11 then made Enid 100 mi over rough roads not much mud but rutted up auto’s going thru early. I may get my teeth Sat. but sure Mon. then we will roll on toward Carthage. don’t know whether we go near Niles or not if we do will call. we found Aunt Stell’s house. the lake we camped by is at the end seams north of Cimarron St. when you see her ask her if she knows where “Prospect Lake” is? we got the letter telling the reason Bertha & Carl left think I mentioned it in a letter I wrote you. ever since we left Cody we just toddled along & I kept wondering what would be the first to go wrong well Sun. pa noticed after he threw in low it would not go on high again so got out & examined it the frame was broke on left side & letting things miss match well we had to turn back & south a mite to a little “Hinky Dinky” town Kendall, Kan. 18 mi. to next town on route & we sure could not make it so had to turn. one Garage in town & that locked. a man come along & directed us to a man that was good at such work. he had gone out somewhere to fix a “Dodge” so all we could do was “keep our shirt on.” at last he came between 6 & 7 we were all ready camped in his yard & a storm coming oh how the wind can blow in Kan. but the rain did not amount to any thing. now back to the car the man (James Alexander) would not tackle it he had no tools &c. but lent us his crowbar pa put the jack under & wired the bar on next morn. he finished wiring &c & we went on toward Lakin, Kan. 18 miles there “old Lizzie” went in Garage for the first time since her stay with us. before going in G- pa dumped me in a camp & I done a dishpan wash the first wash since the Sat. before leaving Seattle we left there span clean. well by the time I got wash done then 11.30 got dinner pa come on time. then I done dishes & wrote to Hattie the flies were so thick I tho’t I’d go wild, so went down Posted letter got groc. just got back when pa drove in. then packed up took c-bar to station shipped it back $.50 to the good man then left town 4.30. only drove 18 mi. when another storm came up so stopped at a farmers he advised us to put car in barn & stay all night in the dry. so we took his advise. Oh but “the winds blew & the rain fell upon that barn & it fell not.” & we woke in the morn, greatly rejoicing. he was another nice man Ray Tindell wife & four children they moved there (Holcomb) 4 yr. ago from Mo. the next night I told you about in Medicine Lodge. three nights in succession storm the car & rain held us about two days but we are here & feeling just fine so why worry. expect to get a letter from you while here Pa says send your next letter to Carthage, Mo. R.8 care Juliett W. Hill. guess that will be our home while in Mo. can’t tell how long we will be there. will quit for night. finish in morn. dentist hr 8.30 having teeth or gums treated “Piared” (besides)

Pa done what he could & they charged him $4.28 quite a diff. The folks here are well. Becca is as stout as ever. keeps school girl boarders. one week yet (summer school) Lucy is home & going to school have not seen the other child. yet. heard Horace talk about going to Marshall. that’s where they lived when we were here before. we took ride yes.
