From Lake of the Ozarks, by H. Dwight Weaver, page 25:
"The Bagnell Ferry began operation across the Osage in 1882 with Samuel Umpsted as contractor. The operation prospered until the completion of Bagnell Dam [1931], after which Hwy. 54 was routed across the top of the dam. The ferry was the scene of several significant accidents during its existence, one of which resulted in people drowning. J.L. Howser ran the ferry from 1932 to about 1940 for the benefit of local farmers who had farms on the opposite side of the river."
