"Datil National Forest was established in New Mexico by the U.S. Forest Service on June 18, 1908 with 1,255,883 acres from Gila National Forest and other lands. On February 23, 1909 Magdalena National Forest and other areas were added. On December 24, 1931 the entire forest was transferred to Cibola National Forest. The name was discontinued.
"“The Datil Forest is presently part of the Magdalena Ranger District of Cibola National Forest, in the Datil Mountains to the north of Datil in Catron and Socoro Counties."
