Although most commonly known for producing enormous amounts of snow, large lakes, such as the Great Lakes, also have moderating effects on the climate around them. The warmer water in the lakes keeps the climate warmer than would otherwise be expected. In fact, for agricultural and horticultural purposes, the climate zone for the land along the southern shore of Lake Ontario is that same as that of Maryland.
