There were two cisterns for holding rainwater in the basement of Ben and Mary's house. The two cisterns were connected by a valve that, when it was open, kept the level of the water in both cisterns the same. When the valve was closed, water was drawn from one cistern, leaving the other as a reservoir. The two cisterns were removed during restoration of the house in 2010.
