Letters Sent Home

24 Jan 1922

Dear ones one & all

Received letter & Parcel Post box today pictures fine of children Mary sure is some letter writer pretty callender the earth quake shocks were the battle ships at San Pedro at target practice we were at Redondo they say they were only using five inch guns but the air was heavy so it carried the sound near 100 miles. that is what they say here target practice but it was at night so I dont know the houses jared like they were Blasting papers make light of it

Last Thursday night it froze ice 3/8 of an inch think out on Rays wattering trough Friday & sat nights were nearly as bad the flowers look sick from 40% to 50% of oranges & c are frosted the association with not let them pick before Feb 6 so as to let the frost show on the fruit so it wont get on market

we are both well went to exhibition park yesterday will send book sometime showing part of what we saw want to go & see where they dug them up only 6 miles from city today went to see them make movie films tomorrow expect to go to San Gabriel mission to see the mission play. I am sending signed contracts with fert. company will can send (2) too of them to company if he wants to bother with it also signed order enquire as to prices from other agents before giving them an order I crossed off the line on order where it says for you to pay freight it is better for them to pay it Folger used to let me do that way perhaps you cannot sell 20 ton which is a carload do not let them make you order before you are ready do not see 1.9.3 goods on price list they will give you prices on them if you ask them 2.8.2 is priced $32.50 then 1 1/2% off to July 1st + .05% for cash = .065 $32.50 x .065 = 2.11250 $32.50 - $2.11 = $30.39 cash April 1st if you can understand these figures that is the way the discount goes I will write Co to let you act for me untill I get back but in case you can do better let them go to grass (?) & tell them the reason they may better prices.

Love to all BEW

[Ben’s letter was written on the back of a Dec. 12, 1921, letter from The American Agricultural Chemical Company, Buffalo Sales Department, Buffalo, Office 129 Lewis Street, P.O. Drawer 970, regarding the sale of fertilizer for spring 1922.]

Grandma

Dear Russell & Wilfred

I will have to tell you all about going out to Griffith park they had quite a few animals bears deers white deer buffalo elks camels the deer were not as tame as the ones at Buffalo. they had some animals I can’t tell their names but the cutest thing there was a parrot oh he was a beauty he was red with dark blue wings & a long red tail they were in a big cage nearly as large as our house well we were standing side of the cage & he flew where we was & G.pa gave him a little soft stone & he chewed it. we walked along on the other side of cage & he flew there where we were & G.Pa cracked a walnut he found & gave it to him & he held it in one claw & picked out the meat with his beak then he gave him two pieces & he had one in each claw & kept his eye on the other birds.

Tues. eve. Jan. 24

Thanks for the lovely picture guess I will keep both ha! ha! why wasn’t Pa & Ma on too & the calender we sent to you glad Hazel is better. be careful don’t hurt Marys feelings she is pretty touchy. no they don’t can fruit here not all kings B- bo’t 3 peaches when we first come they looked fine as pretty as you ever saw & they were the hardest & the most tasteless things you ever tried to eat. we were over to see how they made moving pictures, not the real pictures but how they were taken quite interesting but were a little disappointed. tomorrow we go to San Gabriel to see a “mission play” they say its great. well all are in bed but Helen & I so will go to bed & save electricity I like the pict. that W- is picking his fingers but like R- best in the other so there you are. did you ever hear Cousin Tom Sintzel is in pretty bad shave has leakage of the heart when we were at Lens he was in Toronto to see an old Dr he had all faith in. don’t know whether I have answered all questions if not ask them again. I forgot to ans. one question Mary asked yes the girls are as silly out here as at home they bob their hair & I think mama would look fine with hers bobbed good night not quite so cold papers say winter is over. I have quit guessing. got a long letter from Mrs. Wallace Colter, she would not praise Calif. so if she were here this year & had to buy new undercloths as I did & then freeze.

Love to all Hope all keep well Ma
