Mary was particularly interested in the welfare of her youngest grandchild, Dennis "Wilfred" Cook, who was about four years old when Ben and Mary left on this trip. On several occasions prior to their leaving, he had had episodes that suggested he might have a health problem. From her experience with her own son, Dwight Dewey Wilson, Mary was concerned that Wilfred might have epilepsy. This later proved to be the case.
