Mary's Journal Entry
rested fine last night beside a small irrigating ditch runs all the while clear water got up early enough before daylight but the cars kept us till 8:5 stopped & got apples & cider. Bill worked at his car again its bum today but he toddled on thru Banning, San Bernardino. Called on Whitmer i in Redlands took their pict. back down town. Bill found his cousin Fred Campbell i then we went to campgr & had our lunch a little hot place men shaved & about 3:30 Bill made up his mind to go on nearer Los Angeles. Orange & Lemon orchards one after the other & palms & roses all along the road some grain just up nice. grapes acres of them. roads fine went in on the Foothills Boulevard. landed in Glendora in free camp ground dark enough gets dark about 6. 92 miles our front wheel went on bum & had to stop west of Redlands & put in 3 balls. My nephew Harley’s ii birthday.

Dear ones at home
Well here we are waiting beside the road in the shade waiting for Bill to fix his car it is 10:20 & his car has been sick all morning & so has Bill. so he says (its in his head) he & pa just bo’t some apples 4¢ lb. he ate one & says he feels better. they drank sweet cider too & Juanita & I are waiting to see how he feels when that works. well this is a nice country in these valleys fruit trees nice big orchards irrigated & worked like Lake road.i this is poor paper but the tablet is in suit case. they are cranking on their car but no go yet. I hardly know what to say unless I tell about our camp. we were beside an irrigating canal (they call them) just thru a small town. Palm Springs. on the sand among “grees wood” just cool enough to sleep fine & we all did sleep no mosquitoes to bother. we got up before the sun but did not get started untill 8.5 & this is the third stop on we go his car is moving

I did not get chance to mail this so tell you the latest we found Christ Whitmer & wife ii we feel pretty well acquainted she was a Schenk Sam’s cousin she knew the Smoyers & Ortts both as well as he I will write Mrs. L- iii in a day or so. hard to get away from Whitmers
two months today we left home everyone you meet along the road knows you or salute you in some way
